The laboratory has special areas that allow activities such as: reproduction, rodent colonies maintenance, quarantine, area for experimental animals, areas for procedures.
The laboratory carried out the following activities:
- Production of laboratory animals (mice and rats)
- In vivo testing activities – the use of animals in experimental procedures for research projects or commercial contracts
Currently, the Animal Husbandry houses mice (C57BL/6J, BALB/c) and rats (Wistar), as well as genetically modified mice from Jackson Laboratory (Bar Harbor, ME, USA).
Protocols for in vivo experiments can be designed by the beneficiary or can be established together with the researchers from the laboratory.
In our unit there are equipment for metabolism studies, for haematological analysis, for behavioural tests to assess the effect of drugs on the motor coordination or to evaluate learning and memory in rodent models of central nervous system disorders, a complete gait analysis system for quantitative assessment of footfalls and locomotion (CatWalkTM XT), and a system for cardiac and general echography with applications in cardiovascular, cancer and inflammatory diseases (VEVO 210 Ultrasound System).
